Quito is a great little city.
The people I met who got in trouble in Quito were robbed on their first night.
High altitude makes you a little spaced out. So you have to be careful.
Have a hotel booked in advance, I recomend the new (Gringo) town area, and take a cab dirrectly to your hotel so you can get your orientation. El Maple is a nice little restaurant to have a vegitarian meal and meet travellers.
As all the guides say, take cabs at night or keep to busy main streets.
Quito is safe in the day. If you have the dosh you can become a member of South American Explorers and check out the latest safety scams they have posted in their club house.
Lucky you, Don.

Quito is a really nice city, although 12 days is a long time to spend there. Things to do include going to Otavalo which is an amazing market about 2 hours north, or going to the centre of the world monument which is about an hour. You should also think about heading out to the coast like to montanita or into the jungle like to Tena as you could probably do a lot in 12 days.
I found Quito perfectly safe and i dont think you should have any troubles. If you want to know which areas to avoide go along on South American Explorers where they have a map of areas where people have been mugged etc. The address is 311, Jorge Washington, Y Leonidas Plaza.
For a great place to saty i would recomed the Posada del Maple. Really great place
Hope that info is usefull
